What is the oldest Hebrew inscription?
During the 70's, 80's and 90's, the academic view was that the first five books of the bible were written / "Invented" in the 8th and possibly even the 7th century BC (the time of King Josiah).
One of the reasons was that the scholars could not find proof that the Israelites were literate.
Compared to the Egyptians and the Babylonians, no Hebrew inscriptions were found from the time of Joshua and the Judges (Iron Age period 1300-1200 BCE).
The idea that such a magnificent work of literature like the Bible could only be written at a later stage when the kingdom of Judah was established, and scribes were an integral part of the ruling system.
In 1976 Professor Israel Finkelstien excavated a remote Ephramite village and found what is possibly the earliest Hebrew inscription attesting to the literacy of the early Israelites.
